The Carrie Diaries Gets Carrie Bradshaw's Backstory Wrong

January, 11. 2013.

The Carrie Diaries (premiering Monday on the CW) tells Carrie Bradshaw's coming-of-age story. a story we got very, very little of from Sex and the City. Yes, we know she dated a guy named Jeremy in high school and that she had an abortion in 1988 — but as for cold, hard, biographical facts, we didn't learn much from the show. Except for this, from the seventeenth episode of the fourth season.

The SATC backstory: Carrie's dad "quit" her and her mother when she was 5. (We probably didn't need to hear Ron Rifkin give a speech on daddy issues, but this was a backstory we could get behind.)

The TCD backstory: Carrie's mom died just before Carrie's junior year of high school. Her dad is a very present, Danny Tanner type (minus, so far, the vacuum).

Chloe Bridges plays Donna Ladonna - first frenemy

April, 3. 2012.

chloe bridgesEvery story needs a villain, even the teenaged Carrie Bradshaw.

Actress Chloe Bridges, who landed the plum role of Donna Ladonna on March 14, was seen looking chic earlier today heading to The Carrie Diaries set in New York City.

The project, based on Candace Bushnell’s novel, chronicles Carrie's coming of age in the 1980s and follows the blossoming writer through her senior year and relationship with Sebastian Kydd and rivalry with popular girl Donna.

Donna is described in the novel as 'popular and confident, though boasting a bit more than meets the eye' since she eventually turns into Carrie's first-ever 'frenemy,' a term Bradshaw once coined on a SATC epsiode.

In the novel, Donna is feared among her classmates and has many male admirers. She wants to be a model and later becomes the subject of Carrie's photography project during senior year.

Donna later ends up sharing her cousin's phone number with Carrie for her to contact when she first arrives in New York.

Carrie Diaries Wardrobe

April, 2. 2012.

Experienced costume desiger Eric Daman (who's responsible for all the gorgeous Gossip Girl looks) is taking the reigns, and is dishing on all the awesome looks to come!

"Well the show takes place in the 80's so Stephanie Savage [the show's creator] and I decided to create a sense of 'aspirational authenticity' because the 80’s were really decadent and as for as clothing goes, you want to make it very modern -- we wanted to inject freshness," he tells

And fans will be happy to know that the new show will definitely include a nod to the infamous "Carrie necklace."

"We are doing a little 'C' necklace; it's by Alex Woo," he reveals.

"I think the team in charge of casting the Carrie role did a really great job. Anna Sophia is a delight, she's a free spirit, a quirky little girl," he says, before adding, "She has a very big Manolo to fill!"

Doctor Who Alum Cast In SATC Prequel

March, 25. 2012.

Freema Agyeman After an extensive search, The Carrie Diaries found its leading lady last month, and now the Sex and the City prequel rounds out its cast with the characters that helped turned the small town country girl into the Prada princess.

Former Doctor Who companion Freema Agyeman is trading in her TARDIS keys for ones to the penthouse, by landing a supporting role on The CW’s pilot, The Carrie Diaries. Agyeman will portray young Carrie Bradshaw’s (AnnaSophia Robb) mentor Larissa, who is described as a cool cutting-edge editor for Interview Magazine – an editor who is also not stranger to partying hard. Larissa will help the newly-planted Carrie navigate through ‘80s Manhattan, while helping the budding writer hone her craft.

Should the pilot get a full series commission (which seems probable), the recent casting of Agyeman will set the UK actress up for her North American debut.

No mention yet if Sex and the City gal pals Miranda, Charlotte or Samantha will make an appearance – but in what is shaping up to be a Smallville for girls, the origin story of Carrie Bradshaw might be altered a bit to give younger versions of the Sex and the City characters a chance for a cameo. Fans of The Carrie Diaries novel already know that at the end of the book series, a familiar SATC face makes an appearance, adding to the likelihood that writer Amy Harris will work fan-fav characters into the prequel.

AnnaSophia Robb as Young Carrie Bradshaw

March, 23. 2012.

"The search for Carrie Bradshaw was an exciting adventure," executive producer Amy B. Harris says in a statement about the casting process. "Having been a part of the Sex and the City series, I felt such an honor and responsibility to the fans of the show to find someone who embodied the spirit of Manhattan's favorite ‘It' girl."

So what was it about Robb that convinced Harris, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage that she was the one?

"When AnnaSophia Robb walked into the room, we knew we had found her. Her grace, intelligence, sense of fun and her empathetic nature make her the perfect girl to bring our young Carrie to life," Harris explains. "The fact that she loves a gorgeous pair of heels doesn't hurt either."
And don't worry, fashionistas, the pilot brought in the big guns to dress Carrie: Gossip Girl's costume designer Eric Daman, who also worked on Sex and the City! "It's a rare invitation to dress a character whose reputation truly precedes her," Daman says. "Having played a hand in designing for the Carrie we know and love, I am honored to be chosen to carry the torch—to illuminate the woman we know by discovering the young lady she was."

Sarah Jessica Parker Gives New Carrie Bradshaw Her Blessing

March, 22. 2012.

The torch has been passed: "Sex and the City's" original Carrie is giving the new Carrie her blessing. Sarah Jessica Parker has reached out to the new Carrie Bradshaw, AnnaSophia Robb, who will star in The CW's prequel pilot, "The Carrie Dairies."

"She sent me a letter! I wrote her one back, too," Robb, told Us Weekly "She was just very encouraging about it all. It was really cool!"

Robb is starring as a young Carrie Bradshaw in the new pilot based on Candace Bushnell's prequel young adult series to "Sex and the City," "The Carrie Diaries." Parker played the iconic role for six seasons on HBO and in two feature films. Parker, "Sex and the City" creator Darren Star are and former "SATC" showrunner Michael Patrick King are not involved with the new pilot.

"The Carrie Diaries" hails from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the producers behind "Hart of Dixie" and "Gossip Girl." The duo will serve as executive producers on the project. Former "Sex and the City" writer and co-producer Amy B. Harris will serve as the showrunner for the pilot.

The CW has not made any scheduling decisions for the 2012-2013 TV season so at this point, "The Carrie Diaries" is just a pilot.
